June is World Oceans Month! This is a time to appreciate and learn more about our oceans and the marine life that inhabit them. It's also an opportunity to raise awareness about the threats that these ecosystems face, and what we can all do to help protect them.
Cruise lines have pledged to do their part to keep our oceans safe. Many cruise lines, like those part of the Carnival Corporation, have already started building their newer ships to run on Liquified Natural Gas, the cleanest fossil fuel, which is not only a better alternative for ships sailing our seven seas, but also for the air around us. LNG produces 25 per cent less carbon dioxide, zero sulphur emissions and up to 95 per cent less nitrogen oxide than conventional fuel. Lots of minor changes have been taking place onboard, as well, like eliminating plastic straws.
For people who love cruising, this is a time to think about how our actions impact the ocean, as well. Here are some simple things we can all do to help make a difference:
· Recycle onboard and ashore
· Don't buy products made from endangered species
· Use environmentally-friendly sunscreen
· Don't litter in the ocean or on beaches
· Speak up if you see something bad happening, like someone polluting the water or harming marine life
Let's all do our part to help protect the ocean during World Oceans Month and every month so that we can continue to travel the beautiful seas around the world!
